The Great American Songbook Foundation in Carmel, Indiana invites applications for the position of Director of Library and Archives. GASF consists of a small museum, archives, and music library that reaches both local and national audiences through its multi-disciplinary programming including access to its extensive collections, creating public exhibitions, and offering music-based programs for various audiences.

Headquartered at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana, the Songbook Foundation advances the rich musical legacy of the American Songbook by curating and preserving a vast archives of items representing the creators, performers, and publishers of this musical genre and making it discoverable; operating a multimedia exhibit gallery; overseeing the Songbook Hall of Fame; offering programs for the public and research opportunities for scholars and artists; and providing educational opportunities for student musicians, including the annual Songbook Academy® summer intensive. The purpose of this position is coordinate all functions of the Great American Songbook Foundation Library and Archives.

Essential Functions

  1. Develops and implements Library and Archives policies.
  2. Represents the Library and Archives in discussions with the Board of Directors.
  3. Oversees acquisition, care, and management of the collection.
  4. Processes archival collections according to professional archival standards to facilitate discovery by researchers.
  5. Catalogs published materials for addition to the library collection.
  6. Supervises departmental interns, volunteers, and staff.
  7. Prioritizes and oversees the digitization program of the library and archives.
  8. Participates in grant writing and fundraising activities.
  9. Responds to reference requests.
  10. Assists on-site researchers.
  11. Manages daily operations of the building.
  12. Selects and communicates with vendors regarding functions within Library and Archives.
  13. Leads library and archives outreach to visiting groups.
  14. Promotes the Library and Archives through social media and written publications.
  15. Seeks collaborative opportunities with other institutions on programs such as digitization.
  16. Participates in professional and community organizations to promote the Great American Songbook Foundation.
  17. Tracks research requests, researcher visits, and other collections management data.
  18. Analyzes and coordinates the departmental budget and controls expenditures to administer the approved budget.
