 THE POSITION: 
 
 
 
 
 Carlsbad -The Community: &#xa0;This nearly 40 square mile city is ideally situated in north San Diego County with an approximate population of 115,000. It offers a great climate, beautiful beaches, lagoons and abundant natural open space. World class resorts, family attractions, well planned neighborhoods, a diverse business sector and a charming village atmosphere combine to create the ideal California experience. Carlsbad City Library is seeking enthusiastic and technologically-savvy individuals to fill two Senior Librarian openings.&#xa0;Positions in this class are heads of major library divisions and administer a variety of special programs, resources, and services.&#xa0;The Senior Librarian under general direction, will perform advanced professional librarian duties in support of the Genealogy and Carlsbad History Division or the&#xa0;Children&#39;s&#xa0;Division of the Carlsbad City Library.&#xa0;&#xa0;Other responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and supervising services and programs; supervising the work of library employees; and maintaining relationships with supporting organizations.&#xa0; Genealogy and Carlsbad History Division : The ideal candidate will be an experienced genealogist, archivist and preservationist with demonstrated experience in managing digital-archival projects, and a deep understanding of digital asset management systems and processes. In addition, the individual should enjoy and feel comfortable developing and maintaining relationships with patrons, the community, donors, outside organizations and other city departments. The position is primarily responsible for collecting and preserving local information for future generations and maintaining and developing the well-respected genealogy collection and services. Children&#8217;s Division: &#xa0;The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to working as part of a team dedicated to providing excellent customer service, possess a sound educational background in public library children&#39;s services, have experience with, as well as a love of, working with children, and knowledge of and ability to apply principles of leadership to volunteers, professional and paraprofessional staff. &#xa0; 
 
 
 
 &#xa0; 
 
 
 
 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
 
 
 
 Plan, organize and direct a variety of library services, such as reference services, collections, technical services, genealogy, data base services, and children&#39;s programming. &#xa0; Assist patrons in making effective use of library facilities by answering questions and helping them use the library&#39;s resources. &#xa0; Supervise and assist in the selection and cataloging of library materials, performing a variety of other professional library work requiring a thorough knowledge of library materials and resources, and participate in the preparation of reference materials lists and bibliographies. &#xa0; Supervise personnel in all phases of library services such as the charging and discharging of materials, recording of and collection of fines, and maintenance of shelving. &#xa0; Read books and prepare book reviews. &#xa0; Respond to resident requests for information. &#xa0; Represent Carlsbad City Library in the community and at professional meetings as required. &#xa0; Assist in providing a variety of staff assistance services to the Deputy Library Director, Library Director, Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Carlsbad Library, and others such as the preparation of written reports and oral presentations, complex analysis regarding library service and personnel policies, and similar work. &#xa0; Coordinate library-related activities with other city departments and divisions, and with outside agencies as assigned. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 QUALIFICATIONS: 
 
 
 
 
 
 Knowledge of: &#xa0; 
 
 Principles and practices of professional library work. 
 Standard reference materials. 
 Principles of supervision and public relations. 
 
&#xa0; Ability to: &#xa0;
 
 Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. 
 Perform technical library tasks. 
 Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 EXPERIENCE &#38; EDUCATION: 
 
 
 
 
 
 Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. &#xa0;A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: &#xa0; 
 Three years of progressive responsibility in professional library work experience, preferably including library supervisory experience. &#xa0;Completion of a Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited library school.</description>
