The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives (AJA) seeks an experienced, forward thinking, and collaborative archivist to join our professional staff. This individual will be responsible for the processing and digitizing of the Sy Syms collection of the AJA as well as its ongoing maintenance. The candidate will also serve as coordinator for other digital collections of the AJA and will help to implement policies and procedures for the management of born digital and digital archives at the AJA. Reporting to the Associate Director and serving as a senior staff member, the Syms Archivist will also be asked to perform general archival duties, including the arrangement and description of manuscript materials, preparing finding aids, cataloguing collections using archival standards, digitization of specific documents and collections, overseeing support staff, and providing reference support when needed.

Qualifications: •ALA accredited MLIS degree with graduate level course work in archival management. •At least 8+ years’ experience as a professional archivist. •Experience working in a team setting and managing employees. •Knowledge and experience with relevant standards for archival description and preservation, including DACS and EAD. •Knowledge of born digital and digitization best practices. •Experience managing large digital projects. •Must demonstrate an ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines and goals •Ideal candidate will have good communication skills, be well organized, adaptable, and can work collaboratively and take initiative. •Must be able to lift and move 40-pound boxes.
Preferred: •Experience with archival information management systems (ArchivEra, etc.), Adobe Creative Cloud, and other applications relevant to archives. •Knowledge of American Jewish history and/or American history is preferred.
The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives (AJA) is a division of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), and was established in 1947 by renowned historian, Dr. Jacob Rader Marcus, in order to collect, preserve, and make available for research, materials on the history of Jews and Jewish communities in the Western Hemisphere (primarily focusing on America) including data of a political, economic, social, cultural, and religious nature.
