Assistant Archivist
Reporting to the University Archivist and Head of Special Collections and University Archives, the Assistant University Archivist (Archivist) accessions, arranges, describes and preserves manuscript and archival collections. The Archivist participates in archival records management activities, and provides records management instruction to university offices and departments. They oversee projects involving department staff, student workers, and volunteers. The individual provides reference services to members of the Colgate community and other researchers, and is an active member of the department’s instructional and outreach programs. The Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) department at Colgate University is a fast-paced academic environment where collections care is balanced with primary source instruction and reference work to create a dynamic workplace. The department welcomes solution-oriented applicants who demonstrate initiative and identify opportunities to produce positive change. Responsibilities
Ensure proper storage, treatment, and preservation of the collections in all formats.
Demonstrate a commitment to the educational role of the Colgate University Libraries by overseeing and actively participating in efforts to integrate use of archival materials, rare books, manuscripts, and other original materials into the curriculum through promotion and instruction.
Plan and mount exhibits that highlight important aspects of the library’s collections, particularly as they relate to the curriculum and important university events.
All library faculty are expected to participate in library faculty governance; engage in service to the Colgate University community; serve on library and university committees; demonstrate an active commitment to the library profession by engaging in research, professional development, and other activities related to continuing appointment and promotion.
Other duties as assigned by the University Archivist and/or the University Librarian.

Required Qualifications
An MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution, or an equivalent masters degree.
Knowledge and understanding of trends and best practices in the field of archival management.
At least one year experience working in an academic archive or special collections department.
Strong commitment to core concepts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), with an awareness of current DEI issues in the library and information science profession and related fields.
Preferred Qualifications
Two to four years of experience working with institutional archives.
Interest in engaging in instruction and collaborating with faculty in other departments on campus.
Knowledge of archival appraisal, arrangement, and description best practices.
Knowledge of archival or primary source materials and archival collections management systems.
Experience creating DACS compliant finding aids encoded in EAD.
