Job SummaryAlthough the position will remain posted until filled, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply by end of day on July 1, 2022.In partnership with Harvard's Administrative Fellowship Program and the ACRL Diversity Alliance, the Harvard Library Diversity Residency Program attracts talented librarians, and in particular, members of historically underrepresented groups, to provide meaningful professional working experience and to cultivate the professional goals and interests of the resident. Additionally, through a combination of events sponsored by the Harvard Library, the Administrative Fellowship Program, and the ACRL Diversity Alliance, Residents have the opportunity to work in an academic environment complemented by career development experiences.
As part of the Harvard University Archives (HUA) staff and reporting to the Harvard University Archives' Collections Services Archivist/Processing Manager, the Processing Archivist for Global Collections is responsible for arranging and describing HUA and HCL Americas, Europe, Oceania Division (AEOD) archival collections that contain or are fully comprised of materials in Slavic languages (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Czech, Slovak, Polish). In collaboration with AEOD staff, the Processing Archivist for Global Collections will identify and prioritize unprocessed collections. Under the supervision of the HUA's Collections Services Archivist/Processing Manager, the Processing Archivist for Global collections will follow established guidelines and procedures used by Harvard University Archives.
This is a two-year residency.
Position Description - Appraisal of archival materials and collections at AEOD and HUA.
- Creation of and updates to catalog records and finding aids.
- Research support in the HUA reading room.
- Archival instruction as part of HUA programs.
- Participation in collection development activities in both HUA and AEOD, and participation in the Harvard Library community on committees, working groups, discussion groups, or in other collaborations.
Basic Qualifications - Master's degree in library/information science with a concentration in archival studies or the equivalent.
- Minimum of 1-year professional work experience. Professional experience may include internships and volunteer experience.
- Reading knowledge of one or more Slavic languages (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Czech, Slovak, Polish).
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Additional Qualifications and Skills - Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and, antiracism (EDIBA).
- Experience processing or surveying archival collections.
- Experience managing complex projects.
- Strong creative and analytical thinking skills.
- Training and experience working with archival and library cataloging systems.
- Experience with EAD encoding a plus.
- Ability to adapt quickly to new organizational/library work settings.
- Able to work independently and as part of multiple teams simultaneously; collaborative; flexible.
