Position Summary and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the Archivist focuses on the collection, appraisal, processing, and maintenance of archival records of the college and related manuscript collections, especially those that deal with underrepresented groups. In addition, the Archivist assists in the creation and development of outreach activities to engage the college community and other audiences with these materials and the stories they document. Salary starting at $53,000 and commensurate with experience.
Position responsibilities:
- Communicates with offices and departments to identify and acquire institutional records of enduring value.
- Accessions, appraises, and processes archival and manuscript collections.
- Shelves and tracks all collections.
- Provides reference assistance in tiered system.
- Teaches classes relating to the College Archives and related topics as assigned.
- Plans and supervises student projects.
- Collaborates with colleagues in the Digital Library to preserve and make holdings available in online environments.
- Works with students, faculty, administrators, and alumnae/i to draw a fuller history of the college from its archival collections.
- Consults with Head of Special Collections on planning, complex issues, etc.
Qualifications
Required skills and experience:
- A master’s degree in history and/or library or information science, with coursework in archival management.
- Experience working in an archival environment.
- Knowledge and understanding of trends and best practices in the field of archival management.
- Experience arranging and describing archival and manuscript collections.
- Knowledge of software and technology used to address archival issues.
- Experience creating EAD finding aids.
- Strong commitment to public services.
- Ability to work both collegially and independently.
- Effective communications skills.
- Competence and sensitivity in working at a college in which students are broadly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
Preferred skills and experience:
- Work experience in an academic institution.
- Experience supervising students.
