Summary:
The Black Archives History and Research Foundation is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and self-directed individual for a fulltime Archivist position. The candidate must have experience processing large archival collections and be familiar with archival fundamentals and terminology. Overseen by the Executive Director, the Archivist will be trained in our processing procedures, in the identification and handling of architectural drawings, and in requesting collection materials to and from the Black Archives Repository. The Archivist will develop a processing plan and use AtOM and Archon for describing collections of architectural drawings, photographs, project files, Newspapers, and research materials.

The Archivist will work closely with and report to Executive Director
Job Specific Responsibilities
• Develop a processing plan for the collection, considering existing processing procedures and duration
of the position.
• Implement and carry out the arrangement and description of a large collection of architectural
materials.
• Manage the movement of the collections’ materials with an existing online retrieval and pickup system
between the storage repositories to the processing area to ensure timely processing of the collection.
• Create and enter accurate, consistent metadata that will support discoverability of and access to the
collection.
• Work collaboratively with Collections Team staff and Conservator for the proper housing, care, and
handling of the collection.
• Supervise interns and students and supervise the entirety of the archival operations.
• Other duties related to the collection may be assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in library or information science with advanced coursework in archival management or
a Master’s in archival studies is preferred but not required.
• A minimum of two years recent experience cataloging large archives and special collections in a variety
of genres, including visual materials.
• Familiarity with standard collections care, and archives/museum good practices.
• Familiarity with the principles and practices of archival description; practical experience with Describing
Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) preferred.
• Demonstrated working experience in creating and entering accurate, consistent metadata, particularly
in relational databases. Working knowledge of archival management systems such as ArchivesSpace,
AtOm, Archon preferred.
• Intermediate to advanced skill level with Word and Excel.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Additional Qualifications
• Experience working with materials in an archives, special collections or museum setting preferred.
Physical Demands:
• Ability to work at a keyboard and in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time.
• While performing the duties of this job, the Archivist is regularly required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds unassisted. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
