About University of Georgia Libraries
The University of Georgia Libraries include four principal facilities on the UGA campus in Athens, Georgia: the Main Library, the Science Library, the Zell B. Miller Learning Center, and the Special Collections Libraries. The Libraries also has primary responsibility for a number of smaller on-campus libraries, reading rooms and materials centers, and collaborates with several UGA research facilities throughout the state. The UGA Libraries has several special collections: --The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, a leading repository on Georgia history and culture, holding 200,000 volumes in its rare book and Georgiana collections; 40K cubic feet of historical manuscripts, photographs, and university archives; along with maps and broadsides;--The Walter J. Brown Media Archives and the Peabody Awards Collection, which preserves over 200,000 titles in film, video, audiotape, transcription disks, and other recording formats dating from the 1920s to the present; and --The Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, which contains 150 collections from politicians, political parties, public policy organizations, federal and state appointees, and political observ...ers and activists from modern Georgia (1900-present).The award-winning Digital Library of Georgia, an initiative of GALILEO, the state's virtual library, is also based at the UGA Libraries. The DLG works together with Georgia’s libraries, archives, museums, and other institutions of cultural heritage to provide access to the cultural and historical resources of the state of Georgia. The University of Georgia (UGA), established by the Georgia General Assembly on January 27, 1785, is America's first state-chartered university and the birthplace of the American system of public higher education. UGA has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 25 public universities in America for last 10 years. The university's main campus in Athens, Georgia, covers 605 acres and includes 313 buildings.
