The Director of the Archives is responsible for developing and maintaining the Archives of the Dominican Sisters of Peace and its eight Founding Congregations. The Director will develop an efficient system for the acquisition, preservation, arrangement, description, and access to records of historical and enduring value and conduct outreach activities to promote interest in the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: other duties may be assigned.
- Directs the preservation and arrangement of documents and artifacts of enduring value
- Creates and maintains policies for the collection
- Creates budgets and manages finances in an ethical and responsible way
- Implements best practices of safety, security, and disaster management
- Reviews and develops existing finding aids according to archival standards
- Advances the public relations of the Congregation with displays of archival materials
- Coordinates with the Office of Communications to educate the public through social media.
- Coordinates transfer of internal records to the Archives
- Coordinates with the Leadership Team and department heads to assure adherence to record transfer schedules
- Directs and/or conducts research to fulfill the archival requests and inquiries
- Coordinates acquisitions, donations, and loans
- Assures that federal and state retention requirements are followed
- Creates proper procedures for managing the Archives program
- Collaborates with professional archival associations and community organizations
- Provides for on-going professional development of staff
- Mentors graduate and undergraduate students, interns, and volunteers working in the Archives
- Travels to satellite archives
EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Library or Information Science or History with a focus on archival studies; Certified Archivist designation is a plus.
EXPERIENCE: Five years’ experience in archival management and leadership, including supervising and budgeting and seven or more years’ experience in working in archives.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated experience leading and managing complex projects, including integrating several archival collections
- Develop proposals, timelines, budgets, and staffing plans
- Understanding of copyright, privacy laws, and rights management issues relating to analog and born-digital collections
- Demonstrated experience with public programming and exhibits
- Experience in organizational management to perform efficiently and courteously in an environment with a fluctuating workload
- Experience using digital collection management applications, systems, and platforms
KNOWLEDGE:
- Demonstrated ability to use content management systems and digital preservation applications that employ archival standards
- Demonstrated understanding of digitization efforts and knowledge of digital formats, data management, and metadata schema
- Openness to working in a mission-driven organization and learning about religious women’s archives
- Experience with current and emerging archival theory and practices
- Experience with accessioning and processing manuscript collections
- Relevant legal and ethical regulations that apply to archival collections
- Best practices that govern the arrangement, description, and use of archival materials
SKILLS: Must possess excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; possess problem solving skills; operate computer for word processing/data base entry, Internet, and e-mail, and possess skills in other office equipment (e.g., copier, fax, scanner, printer).
ABILITY: Communicate effectively with staff, Sisters, and public; compose reports and correspondence, and edit documents with grammatical accuracy; maintain professional and pleasant demeanor; maintain confidentiality; hold staff accountable; prioritize assigned tasks; meet deadlines; follow directions; work in collaborative situations; availability to travel to satellite archives and meetings.
