The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library (AUC RWWL) supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs—Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. The AUC-RWWL is looking for a highly motivated individual seeking to gain experience broadening access and the discoverability of cultural heritage collections in a full-time, temporary Grant position. Working with the Archives Research Center and the Digital Services Department, this two-year grant-funded project will coordinate and implement the processing, digitization and access of The Joseph Echols Lowery and Evelyn Gibson Lowery Collection.This collection comprises 460 linear feet of documents, photographs, audio visual media and objects documenting the civil rights and social justice achievements of Dr. Joseph Lowery and his wife Evelyn Lowery spanning the years of 1946-2014 including their involvement with the Southern Christian Leadership Council. The Grant Funded Project Processing Archivist will coordinate the arrangement, description, preservation, processing, and access of the Collection and supervise archival assistants. This position will collaborate with the Digital Services Department to make decisions about digitization, outreach, and exhibition of the Collection and will report to the Assistant Director and Head of the Archives Research.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead arrangement, appraisal, and description of archival materials following professional standards and institutional best practices
Devise and implement collection inventory, project plans, procedures and workflows for all types of materials
Perform basic preservation and processing workflows for archival materials including re-housing and surface cleaning
Liaise with the collection donor or key stakeholders regarding collection description, project status, and priorities
Conduct preservation assessments to determine appropriate preservation treatment and archival storage decisions
Make recommendations of archival materials for digitization including assisting with conducting inventories, identification and packaging material
Create descriptive finding aids for the archival collection using ArchivesSpace.
Supervise and assist in the training of an archival assistant
Assist with developing promotional and outreach materials related to the project including exhibition preparation, articles, presentations at professional conferences and blog posts; participate in team meetings, provide status updates and project reports
ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science or advanced degree with experience relevant to the position
Demonstrated knowledge of 20th century African American history, literature and culture highly desirable
Knowledge of technologies and archival content management systems desirable
Ability to perform physical activities associated with the archival environment
