St. Louis Visitation Archives is seeking a graduate student or recent graduate with a degree in archives, libraries, or museum studies to fully process the Rock Island Visitation Monastery and Academy records. This collection is approximately 25 linear feet of documents, photographs, artifacts, and artwork.
This position will allow an individual to work independently, while reporting to the Archivist and collaborating with the Sister from Rock Island Monastery. Tasks include developing a preliminary processing plan, physically processing the entire collection, identifying materials for social media posts/digitization, and developing a finding aid on our Re:discovery software.
Rock Island Monastery and Academy, Villa de Chantal, traces its founding back to 1853 when a group of four Sisters traveled from Montluel, France to Keokuk, IA, to establish a convent and school. In 1865, the house decided to move: half of the Sisters went to Maysville, KY and the other half to Suspension Bridge, NY. After spending 34 years in Maysville, the Sisters decided to relocate again to Rock Island, Illinois. When the Monastery closed in 1992, six of the eleven remaining Sisters joined the St. Louis Sisters of the Visitation and brought their archives with them.
If the collection is processed in less than 11 weeks, then there is the opportunity to work on additional collections within the archives.
