Position Opening: Digital Collections and AV Archivist
The Department of Museums, Archives & Rare Books at Kennesaw State University seeks an energetic and creative team player as Digital Collections and AV Archivist at the Kennesaw State University Archives. The KSU Archives, a unit of the Department of Museums, Archives & Rare Books, serves as the institutional repository for records of enduring value and actively develops collections representing the north and northwest regions of Georgia.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Museums, Archives & Rare Books, the Digital and AV Collections Archivist is responsible for three main areas within the KSU Archives: the digital repository, software used by the Archives and the Bentley Rare Book Museum, and the KSU Archives audiovisual collections. The position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the digital repository including coordinating and collaborating with UITS to ensure the development and maintenance of repository infrastructure and oversee all digital collection ingest, use, and preservation activities. The Digital Repository consists of a locally hosted instance of DSpace with Archivematica as the digital preservation software. The repository has a customized public interface, SOAR (Scholarly Online Access Repository), for access to digital materials.
RESPONSIBILITIES • Collaborate with the Archives Team to facilitate access to selected collections via SOAR. • Develop and maintain policies, procedures and work flow for digital curation, including accessioning of digital content, assigning appropriate metadata schema, scheduling and carrying out regular periodic checks and refreshing strategies for digital content. • Develop and maintain strategies for harvesting, applying metadata schema and making available select websites (KSU and community). • Communicate with UITS and stakeholders about digital repository policies, procedures and workflows. • Work with the KSU Libraries System for long-term preservation of selected digital content in KSU Libraries’ Digital Commons. • Collaborate with KSU departments for long-term preservation of published digital content on websites via SOAR. • Partner with KSU departments to develop selection and preservation strategies for department specific electronic/born-digital records. • Facilitate the transfer of digital content from KSU and donors to the digital repository. In addition, the Digital and AV Collections Archivist oversees and coordinates the evaluation and testing of new archival information and content management systems software, including open source and/or proprietary software. The position will: • Coordinate and collaborate with UITS to set up instances of software for testing and develop migration and quality control strategies. • Recommend and carry out testing of additional software related to the Archives mission under the direction of the Archives Director. • Assist with coordinating implementation with Archives staff and UITS. Finally, the Digital and AV Collections Archivist will: • Support the Processing Archivist by developing collaborative workflows for the efficient processing of collections with AV materials. • Provide description and arrangement services for select AV collections or portions of collections as directed by the Director of Archives • Identify AV collections with outreach potential and communicate with the Outreach Archivist. • Recommend appropriate vendors and prepare selected materials for outsourced digitization as directed by the Director of Archives. The position serves as a copyright resource for the Archives staff and patrons and is responsible for remaining current on copyright issues as they affect Archives services and outreach. The position will liaise with KSU Libraries on copyright issues as needed. The Digital and AV Collections Archivist will carry out additional duties and projects as assigned including special projects, and supporting the Processing and Outreach Archivists by providing reference and consultation services as needed.
